Employer Briefing - Apprentice attendance modes for Functional Skills

Functional SkillsIn February, tpm informed employers about our Functional Skills Pilot, in readiness for Functional Skills replacing Key Skills as the new mandatory component of Apprenticeship Frameworks from 1st September 2010. We published these details to our website in an Employer Briefing.

We want to provide you with advanced notice of the arrangements we have made for teaching the Functional Skills curriculum, starting this Autumn. You will be pleased to know that we have arranged for staff to change their working hours and practices to efficiently reduce the additional attendance required by learners to just 30-minutes more each week.

Learners with A* - C in both English and Maths will not be required to attend Functional Skills classes, as the Government has applied relaxation rules until 2012. All other learners and those who have not presented tpm with their GCSE certificates prior to 1st September will be kept in college for Functional Skills teaching. For this reason it is imperative that you permit any 2010 school-leavers to attend their school on August 26th to collect certificates and deliver them to tpm.

Existing Apprentices, already in learning and attending Key Skills in either Application of Number or Communication will continue to study for these qualifications under the new curriculum attendance modes, described above (A:).

Existing learners who only require the Technical Certificate or Underpinning knowledge (NVQ) teaching will attend at the revised start times timetabled above, but will finish earlier, (B:).

We trust that you find this notification useful in your business planning and thank you for your continued commitment to improving the sector skills of our young people, with us. If you have any questions regarding the above, please contact Quality Director, Paula Hayes.
