Functional Skills - What everyone needs to know

functional skillsIn September Functional Skills will replace Key Skills for all learners in Work-Based Learning, Further Education and Schools.

Current arrangements
Currently, learners work on key skills in English and maths at a level appropriate to their apprenticeship level. Learners who have GCSE results at grade A* - C in English or maths can be exempt from the corresponding Key Skill Award, namely, Communication or Application of Number.

What changes in September 2010?
Learners will be required to complete Functional Skills in ‘speaking and listening’, ‘reading and writing’ (English), Maths and in some occupational study areas, Information Communication Technology (ICT).
At this time, Government has provided no facility for exemptions. This in turn means that All learners regardless of their GCSE grades must complete Functional Skills in full at the level relevant to their chosen award and course of study.

What arrangements has tpm made?
In order to make certain that the transition from Key Skills to Functional Skills is smooth for our learners and employers, tpm has helped pilot Functional Skills for the past 2 years.
We have also shared our experience and understanding of Functional Skills as a training provider and an employer in a DVD Case study commissioned by QCDA.
We are committed to limiting disruption and ensuring our learners and employers receive accurate and useful information during the run up to implementation in September. We will keep you informed of important changes as and when they happen.

Where can I find out more?
QCDA have a great FAQ Database on their website or if you have a specific question for us at tpm you can e-mail us.
