Third successful year of skills for life

Training Plus merseyside has worked with the QIA SFL programme for 3 years and have this week signed off its 3rd action plan with great success. 

We have improved our skills for life practice beyond all recognition in the past 3 years and grown our success rates to 64% in the process.  Claire Collins from the QIA SFL improvement programme  has worked alongside Paula Hayes and the management team to develop and embed SFL with the whole organisation and this year achieved all targeted improvements.

Over the year we have once again adapted documentation and changed systems and procedures to develop the organisation to meet learner needs.  We have:

• developed our initial assessment process further
• creatively merged assessment plans and reviews
• included targeting and mastering SFL in assessment plan / review documents
• created electronic systems to monitor SFL requirements

We have observed practice and questioned learners and staff with regards to delivery and practice.

Our findings:

• 100% of staff are very happy with the new target setting review process that has been embedded
• Staff feel more prepared for the functional skills as learners' skills are now observed and mastered in a vocational context. 
• Learners understand how to develop workplace SFL and are achieving them
• Employers are commenting on action plans and reviews
• Staff feel supported and are able to develop both personally and professionally (questionnaire)
• 100% of 45 learners questioned like the mode of SFL delivery that TPM offers
• 74% of 45 learners questioned think SFL support is good/very good
• 13% of 45 learners questioned think SFL support is satisfactory

Key Skills success rates have risen from 37% in 05-06 to 55% in 06-07and further to 64% this year.

We are very proud of our SFL achievements.  The organisation has worked hard to achieve the goals set in our 07-08 action plan.
