Training Plus merseyside Apprentices Patrick Wilson, Elizabeth McDonald, Kimberley Dalton, Shona Eaton, Stephanie Davies, Jodie Clunnen
and Teacher Trisha Robinson, pictured left were just some of the young people across Merseyside who took part in the Badged Apprenticeships programme. This the second phase of the ground-breaking cultural experience for young people was developed by Joanne Rymer of The Greater Merseyside Learning Providers Federation, as part of Liverpool City's response to 2008 Capital of Culture status.
The programme has involved young people participating in a series af cultural and community based activity days such as a short film production promoting Liverpool Capital of Culture 08 during a day spent at Toxteth TV. At El Rincon Latino, all things Latin began with a quiz based on South America which was very interesting and factual. Apprentices and tutors learned salsa dancing which was lots of fun and exhilerating. Learners worked hard, laughed lots and felt a great sense of achievement when they mastered the dance routine. Learners stepped out of their comfort zone and challenged themselves which enhanced their self-esteem and confidence; so much so that Patrick Wilson an Apprentice with Barbara Daley will MC the Awards Ceremony at the Maritime Museum. Authentic South American food was provided which the Apprentices tentatively tasted and to their surprise thoroughly enjoyed, delicious!
Sonic Boom was an introduction to D.J’ing. Apprentices learned the difference between vinyl records and cd’s. They were shown how to fade songs and scratch records and the variety of music styles used for different events and venues. Invited to use decks and experience D.J’ing themselves, they really enjoyed that experience. Given a budget and resources, the Apprentices had to present their business plan to each other. There was great repect and team work generated by each group especially in the way they congratulated each other on their work and ideas. A great social development and confidence boosting experience for everyone.
The Badged Apprenticeship experience culminated in an event held at the Laird Foundation. During this workshop the Apprentices worked on planning a promotional advert about Liverpool and it's culture. Working in groups the young people produced some excellent work and were given the opportunity to film their individual refections and experiences of the Badged Apprenticeship workshops they had attended. Some of the creativity and expression generated from the experience will be shown and exhibited during the Awards Evening at The Maritime Museum on Wednesday 25th February.
