Employer and Learner inspire delegates about Disability at Liverpool Town Hall

Sandra Brown and Becky Blease at Liverpool Town HallSalon Manager, Sandra Brown and Advanced Apprentice, Becky Blease (pictured right), speaking about their respective experiences of living with and supporting dyslexia, inspired delegates at the Invest to Change Employer event on 7th May at Liverpool Town Hall. Delegates greatly appreciated the chance to listen to the experiences and achievements of keynote speakers and to further consider how young people can be supported to achieve their fullest potential.

This event was part of the wider Invest to Change Project, funded by LSC and managed by Greater Merseyside Connexions, which has aimed to build the capacity of Post 16 learning provision and the Connexions Service to better support young people with Learning Difficulty and Disability. The event included lunch in the Ballroom where a Marketplace allowed employers to liaise and network with sector organisations including; Sector Skills Forums, NAS, Remploy, ASDA, GMLPF, Connexions, RNIB.

Sandra Brown, received the "Most Supportive Employer 2009" award from Training Plus merseyside, on behalf of Hairteck, during the prestigious Hair Show at the Liner Hotel in March. Following the Town Hall event last week Sandra commented; "I beleive it is esential that we raise employers’ awareness about the contribution young people with disabilities and/or learning difficulties can make to the workplace in terms of low sickness records, commitment and loyalty to their employers and not just judge a book by its cover".

Sandra is also currently undertaking an advanced occupational qualification with Training Plus through Train to Gain funding. If you are interested in further support for small businesses contact our Business Dvelopment Consultants or contact your Business Link Adviser.

Lynn Rimmer (Project Manager, Connexions) commented that; "Evaluation of the event has been very positive and we have already begun our follow up work to ensure that information and discussion shared at the day reaches more employers and partners".
