LGBT History Month - February 2010

Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender history month, takes place every year in February. It celebrates the lives and achievements of the LGBT community. Organisations across the North West have planned activities to help celebrate, why don’t you check them out and join in the fun.

Young people often encounter difficulty or discrimination about their sexual orientation and gender identity; sometimes this can lead to bullying. There are a number of LGBT support groups around Merseyside that run throughout the year. These groups are established to give information, advice and support to anyone that needs it. Support groups offer a chance to speak out, share stories, meet other likeminded people and make new friends. YPAS is just one of organisations that provide such a service.

Similarly, there are a lot of informative websites that provide support, advice, forums and more. Gay Youth UK is just one of the websites out there which offer online support.

Stonewall is a national charity which campaigns for LGBT equality and against homophobia and bullying. Some major successes include: lifting the ban on lesbians and gay men serving in the military, securing legislation allowing same-sex couples to adopt and the repeal of Section 28. More recently, Stonewall has helped secure civil partnerships.
