I’m 17 and on a level 2 apprenticeship in hairdressing with Training Plus merseyside. At school I completed a level 1 hairdressing course on day release to a college. After I left school, I started my level 2 with a training company but didn’t enjoy it. With the help of Connexions, I got a place at Training Plus merseyside. I’m much happier here - the staff are really helpful and always smiling.
I’m employed at a salon where my duties include looking after clients’ health, comfort and safety. I help on reception, welcome clients, apply colours, do blow dries and help keep the salon clean and hygienic. The best part of my job is meeting new people - I am a very social person and like making clients feel relaxed and welcome whilst having their hair done. I also love creating new and different hairstyles.
I really enjoy going to classes at Training Plus Merseyside. Trisha, my trainer, helps me build my knowledge, presenting things in a way everyone can understand. My personal assessor Vivien really encourages me and gives me the confidence to learn and do my practical assessments in the salon. She’s patient if I get stuck or confused and goes through things bit by bit until l I understand.
An apprenticeship in hairdressing is intense and there’s lots to learn. I have to be punctual and keep good attendance at both at work and training classes. But the course is very creative and great for showing off my individuality. With patience and commitment it’s giving me great skills and an exciting trade for life.
After my advanced level qualification I’d like to eventually become a hairdressing teacher.
