I am 22 and I work as a nursery nurse in charge of the ‘Toddlers Room’. I really enjoy being with the children and being a part of their growing up; it’s very rewarding and I get a lot of job satisfaction.
When I was in the lower 6th form at school I began doing a lot of volunteer work with the Barnardo’s Project. I discovered I really had a passion to work with children and a Connexions adviser arranged a meeting with Training Plus merseyside for me. They arranged work interviews for me and once I was successful I began my training.
I have now completed my Level 2 and Level 3 Advanced Apprenticeship in Early Years Care & Education. I liked the hands-on approach to training at Training Plus merseyside, and I believe I learned a lot more through this style of learning. There were many things I enjoyed during my Apprenticeship but mostly I value the skills I’ve learnt, especially those linked to caring for children and their needs.
At Training Plus merseyside, everyone is very pleasant. It makes a difference that they are easy to talk to and always willing to help. My personal assessor June was really good; she taught me so much and helped me a lot.
To new students going into childcare, I would say that you need a passion for your work and patience to work with children. Stick with it to get the best rewards.
My long term goal is to get qualified in playwork and specialise in working with children who live with a disability.
