I am 21 and have already completed my level 2 apprenticeship in children’s care learning and development and progressed onto a level 3 advanced apprenticeship. I was working in a community sports programme with youth groups and schools when I saw an advert about apprenticeships with Training Plus merseyside in the local newspaper. I knew I wanted to work with children so I called their recruitment department who helped me find work and enrol on the course.
Now I work as a qualified nursery nurse which I love because everyday I get to work with children. My role involves all kinds of childcare duties: playtime, reading stories, and helping children to learn, play safely and develop. In my job and training I have developed good team working skills and communication skills as well as benefiting from specific additional training provided by Training Plus merseyside such as equality & diversity, Paediatric first aid and HIV awareness courses.
Training Plus merseyside staff are friendly, helpful and good communicators. The thing that was most helpful to me was the great support and understanding I have received with my dyslexia. In training sessions, staff prepare materials on blue paper which helps me read text easier; this is really helpful. The other really important thing is the additional visits I get from my assessor Lisa: having these tutorials every two weeks makes sure that I stay ahead with my learning, breaks work into manageable tasks and means that I have help should I need it. This is very important to me because someday I want to own my own nursery.
For anyone thinking about childcare training I would say you need to be sure that you really want to work with children, have a very patient nature and have very good attendance and time keeping at work and college.
