Whilst at school I completed a level 1 hairdressing course on day release through a local college and I really enjoyed it. Now I am 16 and a level 2 hairdressing student at Training Plus Merseyside. A friend of mine comes here to do a childcare course and she told me all about it. My school and my family really encouraged me when I said I wanted to become a hairdresser.
As an apprentice hairdresser I am developing strong work and social skills. My duties include taking telephone bookings, dealing with enquiries, shampooing and conditioning, applying colour and blow-drying clients’ hair to assist the stylists in my salon. I enjoy my work, meeting and talking to people from all walks of life but what I like most is getting the chance to complete a blow-dry style myself.
Training Plus Merseyside has showed me how to stop my dyslexia being a barrier to my goals in life. Staff members are always available to help and advise me. My assessor and trainer support me by explaining things in more detail or perhaps in a different way when necessary. My assessor knows that my dyslexia can sometimes upset me especially when I spell a word incorrectly but she always reassures me and helps me find the correct spelling.
When a person considers hairdressing as a career, I would say it is important to be 100% committed and if like I do, they feel they have a passion and flair for something my advice is - don’t be afraid to go for it. I hope to continue to a level 3 advanced course and eventually have my own salon.
