They encouraged me to be my own individual whilst understanding my needs and putting themselves out to help me.

I am a 21-year-old qualified hairdresser with Hairtech. I used to be a visual merchandiser with a large retail store in Liverpool before I started my hairdressing studies. My mum is a salon manager and has been a big support. One day when I was in the salon with her, she introduced me to Sandra, a tutor-assessor from Training Plus Merseyside.
Although I wanted to get into hairdressing, because I was 19 I was finding it difficult to find a salon who would take me on as most trainees start at 16 or 17. I had almost given up but Sandra encouraged me to reconsider. She pointed me in the right direction and now I’m really glad I listened to her because I am about to complete my Advanced Level 3 Apprenticeship with Training Plus merseyside.
As a salon stylist my day involves meeting people and helping them decide on a hairstyle that will suit their needs and lifestyle. I have gained great hairdressing skills and knowledge through my training and I use them every day. On a typical day, you’ll find me advising clients on hairdressing products and technical services such as colour and complete re-styles, welcoming regular clients, and mentoring other apprentice hairdressers with their training. Two things I love most about my job is meeting many different people and getting to be creative with hairstyles.
Training Plus merseyside has been great, supporting me through everything. Being 19 when I started training I wanted to move fast so they helped me fast-track my level 2 qualification, arranging double-teaching and making sure I didn’t miss anything out. A lot of my time was spent training but they encouraged me to be my own individual whilst understanding my needs and putting themselves out to help me wherever they could.
If you have a passion for hairdressing then you should seriously consider getting qualified. You’ll have to work very hard and won’t earn much while training but eventually your efforts will pay off. You’ll gain a lot of personal satisfaction and a great sense of achievement. As a qualified stylist you can choose from so many exciting career paths. I want to use my skills and qualifications to get into photographic fashion shoots and high fashion catwalk work.
