The education and training I have received has shown me that there are no barriers in life!

Name: Michael
Sector: Hairdressing

I am working at my Level Two in hairdressing with Training Plus Merseyside.  I was worried that my dyslexia would be a barrier but the education and training I have received has shown me that there are no barriers in life!

A friend suggested I ask Connexions for guidance on what to do when I left school.  When I said I was interested in hairdressing, Connexions helped me apply for an apprenticeship and referred me to Training Plus Merseyside.  Here, we spoke about my strengths – how I liked using my hands and was practical, as well as creative.  We also spoke about my uncertainty about completing theory work and written assignments.  Straightaway I was offered extra support and training in reading and writing.  This was a relief and I was glad I had been honest about this from the start.

I train ‘on the job’. So far I have learnt to colour and cut hair but it’s about talking to people too.  Making the customer happy is essential and for this I need to use listening and social skills. I find that this is what makes everyday interesting.

Everyday is different and I love what I do, whether it’s dealing with people or styling hair.  I can’t wait to do my Level Three in Hairdressing next.
